Kahnawakeronon Woman to Play for Team Canada in the 2017 Nations Cup in Germany– “Honestly it feels amazing, I love being able to be a role model towards the younger generations.”

Kahnawake, Mohawk Nation- December 28th, 2016, 20 year old Brooke Stacey traveled to Fussen, Germany to play for Team Canada in the 2017 Women’s Nations Cup.  Stacey grew up in skates, starting at the age of 2, learning in front of her grandmother’s old house.  At the age of 4 she was playing hockey and continued throughout her academic career.  “Both my parents have played a huge role in me succeeding, they’ve always believed in me and encouraged me to do my best.”  Now at age 20, Stacey will be one of 23 ladies playing for Team Canada in the Nations Cup.  She is also one of two aboriginal women on the Canadian women’s hockey team.

Stacey is a junior at the University of Maine on a full athletic scholarship, having developed talented hockey skills over the past 18 years.  “I train pretty intensively, during the summer it’s usually five days a week, and during the school year it’s usually six days a week.  At home I train at Crossfit Chateauguay; and at school it’s at our gym.”

Stacey plays forward for the University of Maine Black Bears, where she appeared in all 33 games during her 2014-2015 rookie season that ended with 11 goals and 6 assists, and was a Member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team.  Advancing to her sophomore season, Stacey appeared in all 35 games ending with 18 points scored.

“I think the passion grew over time, in high school I had some issues with staying motivated to play, but I knew I couldn’t give up so I continued to train, to get better at the game overall,” said Stacey.  “Honestly it feels amazing, I love being able to be a role model towards the younger generations.”

In 2014, Stacey played for the U18 Team Canada at Nationals, helping the team take gold.  Team Canada continued to watch her progress over the last few years before offering her this momentous opportunity to go after the 2017 Nations Cup.

The tournament will run from January 4th – 7th, 2017; to be played in Fussen, Germany, and Telfs, Austria.  Canada’s first game will be against Czech Republic on January 4th at 4PM, Fussen local time; 10AM EST.

The Women’s Team Canada was established in 1990, and has since won 10 gold medals, and 7 silver.  Akwesasne TV wishes the best of luck to Miss Stacey and the rest of the Women’s Team Canada in the 2017 Nations Cup.
