River Road Standoff with Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Ends Peacefully

SRMT release1On Sunday, March 14, 2016, at approximately 6:29 p.m., the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police received a complaint that Ariwiio L. Swamp, age 24, of 515 River Road, Akwesasne engaged in a verbal dispute with two men at his residence and Swamp produced a shotgun and discharged it into the air.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police released information regarding the event via a press release on their Facebook Page.

Upon arrival to the residence, the Tribal Police secured the scene and a portion of River Road was closed off to ensure public safety. During the course of several hours, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, with the assistance of the New York State Police, established communication with Swamp, instructing him to exit the residence peacefully.

Following an approximately five-hour standoff, at 12:02 a.m., Swamp exited the building unarmed and surrendered to the Tribal Police. Swamp was taken into custody and charged with Reckless Endangering 2nd Degree, Menacing 2nd Degree and Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree. Swamp was arraigned at Bombay Town Court and remanded to the Franklin County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond bail.

The Tribal Police recovered a shotgun believed to be used in the incident.
