Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Reacquires 41.5 Acres of Land

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council has reacquired 41.5 acres of land for the benefit of the tribe. The land is located adjacent to the SRMT Transfer Station, and was purchased in conjunction with the dictates of the 1796 Federal Treaty for regaining lands within exterior boundaries of the reservation.

In a statement issued by SRMT Tribal Council, “the Tribe’s Land Acquisition Policy requires notification be provided of any proposed land purchase or sale, which was done earlier this year. To provide added transparency, notification is also being provided that the purchase was recently completed.”

The intent to purchase this land was made public at the March 9, 2021 Monthly Tribal Meeting. Additional information on the proposed purchase was made on the Tribe’s Facebook Page, and Tribal Members Portal. The Tribe moved forward with the plan to reacquire the land as no written comments or objections were received by the March 19th deadline.

Tribal Council added, “In the absence of a land claim settlement agreement, the Tribe may apply to have the land taken into federal trust for exercising tribal jurisdiction and authority in a manner that preserves and promotes the long-term interest of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.”

Some options being discussed for the use of the reacquired lands include establishing a business park, or the creation of a single-family home neighborhood.
